Allergy Relief?
I have finally found an allergy medicine that works. It blocks over 90% of all my reactions to the hated pollen that has been polluting my air these past months. One would think I would be happy about this, for I can now go back outside and play (or do chores). Unfortunately, as I found out this weekend, the drug has a rather terrible side effect, a known but unlabelled side effect: the drug wears off. This should come as no surprise to anyone, least of all me. All drugs wear off, so what? In my case, when the drug wears off I start reacting to the pollen again. This should still be obvious, but not in the way it happened.
I spent an entire day outside, protected by this allergy medicine, and enjoyed a day relatively free of reaction. The pill did its job and kept me from reacting to the pollen and allergens in the air. The next day, the pill had wore off and I was miserable with a "delayed reaction". It took me all of a few minutes to realize the medicine did not prevent the pollen from assailing my body nor did it prevent the allergens from invading my lungs, eyes, throat, and nose and taking up residence. The drug did what it was designed to do, block my reaction, and that's all it did. The next day I had pollen IN me, but no longer around me, and I was reacting to it.
I do not blame the allergy medicine makers. They produced something which did its job. I'd have to wear a "moon suit" in order to keep the pollen out of me, so I'll have to settle for drugs that will limit my reaction. In all of this I should still be careful. It's not a good trade-off for me. I only delay my reactions, or I have to take the drugs for the entire season, and I'd rather not subject my body to prolonged exposure to new drugs (nor to any drug for that matter). So I am still back to staying in doors until my season is over. I'm used to it, and I like it better than suffering.

Being prone to seasonal allergies as well, I understand where you're coming from. It has always been a trade-off, with regard to medicine - Suffer the harmful qualities of the original condition or deal with the alterations and side-effects you're submitting yourself to by taking the medication. Niether options are much of a choice, but all of us have to make it every day. Personally, I'm with you regarding the issue.. I've never been fond of knowingly degrading my body's natural systems. Organics require a delicate balance of chemical actions and reactions; As such, it probably wouldn't be wise to throw an otherwise foreign substance into the mix and not expect repercussions. I just suffer the runny nose and sneezing as a cost of the freedom to go outside without swallowing medication every morning.
