Things I Don't Understand: Movie Theatres

We finally spent one of our graduation gifts today: we went to the movie theatre. I was amazed and am still perplexed at the amount of people who wanted to watch the particular movie we chose. This movie is not new, but has been out for over two weeks yet the next two showings were sold out when we purchased our tickets and when we finally got our seats, a half-hour early, we had to sit down in front! This was a movie most people had probably already seen and were watching again for the second, third, or nth time. Mind you, this particular movie was showing on three screens, thus many, many people were watching it, and have been.

This only served to remind me that there are those out there who enjoy the movie theatre and will gladly sink piles of cash into watching a movie more than once. I have never fully understood this, because from an economic viewpoint it would be far cheaper to purchase the DVD when it comes out and then watch it again and again and again. I can imagine some like the atmosphere, some like the memories of going to the movies when they were kids, and some like the big screen and array of speakers they cannot get at home. For me I've never liked the crowds, the seats (I always get cramped, but not in the front row), the lack of ability to pause the movie (to use the restroom, to get more refreshments, or to comment on a salient point), and the big screen does nothing for me, and the movies are always too loud for me anyway.

I still cannot fathom why people would be willing to spend so much money to watch a movie more than once, when a little patience will save them money and allow them to watch it on demand.
