Dark Powered Villains
What if there were some ancient dark power, some supernatural evil from the mists of time? What if people could make a contract with it, tap into it, or otherwise use it? What if they use their newfound power to terrorize others and get their own way? Wait a sec … did I just loosely group all myths, folklore, and superstitious tales? :)
It seems to me we have some classic material when we bridge the old superstitions with modern culture in our stories. Nothing is more strange, or perhaps even more terrifying than realizing there is something supernatural out there, and has been out there all along, and someone somewhere knows how to use it (usually for evil). Seems it me there ought to be a wealth of [good] stories still to be told by looking into the past and invoking some ancient evil.

It's a bit generic, but yes you have grouped a LOT of myths, folklore and comic superheros in to one definition.
However from which angle are you thinking of taking the story. As I said, super heros and villians using the same "power source" has been a staple of stories. So far so not strange.
What makes the stories scary is that power going out of control, or worse, how to keep that power in control. Otherwise you have a standard mcguffin to grant the powers.
so, what were you thinking?

At the time I was watching a show in which the villain was your fairly typical "human who sold his soul to [insert demonic figure here]". There was a bit of an odd juxtaposition as this was set in modern Japan, and while they have a more active folklore than we rationalistic Americans, I still had to give pause and consider the ramifications of such an event in today's world.
What if someone were to make a contract with some malign supernatural entity, and what if that entity has been alive and active since the beginning of time (never mind the theological implications here)? Our modern view of our past is one full of superstition and mystical views, which we scoff at. So what would happen if a nightmare came walking out of our historical folklore? Would we even know what to do to combat it, having thumbed our noses at such things?
You are right about lack of control though. There is much fear to be had in losing control or not having control over some force that will have a great affect on your own life.

Actually it's fairly common.
I remember being told the stoey of the Conistine (sp?) comics.
It's a court case, he sold his soul to a number of demons and they were fighting for possesion. Due to the legal process and standoffs he ended up being dammed and immortal...
Personally I liked the sorty touched on by "Angel" where a child is possesed by a demon. When freed, the demon ran off... it turns out that the child was worst than the deamon ever was and it was the deamon that wanted to escape from the child...
