Someday someone will be able to tell me the advantages of living in a highly litigious society, but if that happens they will not be able to explain this story or the host of dumb laws. I cannot help but to laugh and cheer them on, even though everything they will do is technically illegal. In some small way I hope their efforts will bring about a change and get some of these stupid laws off our books. It's bad enough we have to endure stupid warning labels all over the place (Do we really need to be told that a bucket of soap once emptied, then filled with water, could kill a child if it stuck it's head in the bucket of water for a sufficient amount of time?) but to have to endure some really stupid laws is a mockery of our justice system. Can we really ask for justice when we make it illegal to go whale hunting in a land-locked state?

Ever since I started working 50 some miles away from home I have had to endure many terrible driving habits, of other people. I routinely face things like semis who decide to stay in the middle lane for miles, while the right lane remains completely empty and then there are the people who swerve in and out of traffic, but they seem to be few and far between. The ones who take the cake are the ones who drive too fast all the time. In my corner of this world the highest posted speed is 65 miles per hour, and this in only select areas. More commonly is the 55 mph speed zone (which is the highest posted speed for semis in the entire state). Semis rarely drive anything less than 60, and people can be expected to add 5 to 10 mph to the posted speed. I did some math the other night, and in the distance covered in my commute I would save only 4 lousy minutes if I were to drive 70 mph the entire way.

What is the point I am trying to make here? Simply this: slow down. Most people who drive like every second counts only save a few seconds, maybe a couple of minutes. In the process traffic laws and/or safety principles are violated. The risk is not worth the consequences, especially since the consequences can mortally affect an innocent driver (or pedestrian, or bicyclist for that matter).

I hate it when people break the law. I hate it even more when the law prevents us from being stupid.

(As an aside, I nearly hit a kid on a bike today. It was a frightening experience, one I wish I did not have to face.)

Lately I have seen more an more people on bicycles breaking traffic laws and putting themselves in mortal danger. I'm appalled; not only are traffic laws violated (which is enough to get my dander up) but I have had to be more cautious around bicyclists than pedestrians of late. I have seen kids, teenagers, and grown men (never women for some reason) ride recklessly by ignoring stop signs or red lights, riding in the middle of the street, riding on the wrong side of the street, failing to signal, and not wearing helmets (I had to throw that last one in). The last thing I want to see is some person on a bike get creamed by a car.

There is this meme, a plague, a pervasive behavior that has been a sore spot with me. I cannot stand, tolerate, nor understand the blatant violation of some of our most basic and simple traffic laws. On any given trip (not just day) I can spot numerous infractions of these basic, yet needed laws. Why do people do it? Why do they have to put other people's safety in jeopardy? This is one of those issues that will always get me hot under the collar (so to speak), and I'm even worse when proclaiming Christians are the culprits!
